Staffing a household to the Palm Beach season
Palm Beach runs on a calendar that almost no other American market shares. From the end of November through Easter a household may host several times a week, absorb overnight guests, coordinate with clubs and charities and hold a standard of formality that is simply assumed rather than discussed. From May to October the same residence may be closed or lightly staffed.
A search here therefore has to specify two operating states, not one. We define the season role, the off-season role and who owns the transition between them — closing, humidity and storm readiness, vendor supervision and reopening — before the first candidate is approached.
Formality is a skill, and it is verifiable
The Palm Beach roles we place most often are estate managers and majordomos, butlers and formal-service teams, private chefs who can carry both dietary discipline and a twenty-cover dinner, executive housekeepers trained in art, antique, silver and fine textiles, and chauffeurs and personal assistants familiar with PBI patterns and club protocol.
We test these skills rather than take them on trust: service walkthroughs, table and wine knowledge, discretion references from comparable households, and a paid trial at the residence before any offer. Households on the North End, in Midtown and in the Estate Section each have their own rhythm, and we brief candidates on it honestly so nobody accepts a role they cannot hold.
Rotation, confidentiality and terms
Many Palm Beach principals rotate staff to the Hamptons, Nantucket, Aspen or Europe in summer. Where that applies, travel, housing and compensation are written into the role at intake.
