Miami vs. The Hamptons: Where to Base Your Family Office Staff

A side-by-side look at how family-office households in Miami and the Hamptons differ on staffing pace, compensation and multi-residence coordination.

Two different rhythms

Miami runs year-round with a bilingual, aviation- and yacht-adjacent tempo. The Hamptons compress most of the year's intensity into Memorial Day through Labor Day, with a quieter shoulder season and a closed off-season.

Compensation

Senior estate roles land in similar bands ($180k–$260k), but Hamptons seasonal-only placements often carry a season-plus-retainer structure that Miami year-round roles do not. Miami placements weigh bilingual (English–Spanish, often Portuguese) fluency more heavily.

Staff calendar

- **Miami:** consistent year-round headcount, hurricane-prep spikes June–November
- **Hamptons:** heavy scaling Memorial Day–Labor Day, close-down protocols in October

Multi-residence coordination

Miami principals commonly coordinate with Aspen, Southern Europe or Latin America. Hamptons principals coordinate with Manhattan first and Palm Beach or Nantucket second. Both benefit from a Chief of Staff or Director of Residences sitting above the estate managers.

Where to base a family office

Base the family office where the principal spends the most calendar time and where trust, entity and tax structuring is already established. Staff the other residences to a Director of Residences who reports into that office.
