Private Chef vs Personal Chef: which is the right hire?
The two titles are used interchangeably in the market, but the operating model is different. Choosing the wrong one is one of the most common — and expensive — household hiring mistakes.
Private Chef
A private chef works exclusively for one household or principal, on-site, and typically cooks lunch, dinner and events. The role is a full-time employee.
Personal Chef
A personal chef serves multiple households on a schedule — usually cook-and-store meal prep once or twice a week — and is often an independent contractor.

When to choose Private Chef
- You entertain, host and eat in more than four days a week
- You travel between residences and want continuity of diet
- You have specific dietary, allergen or medical requirements
- You want service, plating and beverage pairing, not just food in a container
When to choose Personal Chef
- The household is often empty during the week
- You want healthy prepared meals without a full-time hire
- Your calendar cannot justify a $150k+ base salary and housing
- You already have a household manager who can handle service and events
Frequently asked
- Can a private chef also handle events?
- Yes, up to a point. For seated dinners over 12 guests, most private chefs bring in a trusted sous or off-premise team we help vet and manage.
- Do private chefs travel with the principal?
- Frequently — to secondary residences, on yachts and on longer international trips. This should be defined in the offer letter with per diem and time-off policy.
- Is a personal chef a good bridge before a full-time hire?
- Often, yes. We use a rotation of personal chefs as a discovery period, then convert to a full-time private chef once the household knows its actual meal pattern.
- Do you place both roles?
- Yes. Full private chef search is a retained placement; personal chef rotations are set up on a light-touch coordination model.
