Butler vs Household Manager: which role fits your home?
The two roles overlap enough to confuse principals and agencies alike. Here is how we scope them at Valmore, and how we decide which one — or both — belongs in your household.
Butler
A butler is front-of-house. Their job is the standard of service the principal and guests experience — the door, the table, the wardrobe, the room. They lead by example on the floor.
Household Manager
A household manager is back-of-house. Their job is the operating system — schedules, vendors, budgets, staff and maintenance — so that the front-of-house standard can happen reliably.

When to choose Butler
- You entertain frequently and want a consistent, formal service standard
- You already have someone running operations behind the scenes

When to choose Household Manager
- You have 3+ staff members, multiple vendors and no one owns the calendar
- You have more than one home or property under active management

- Can one person do both roles?
- In smaller households, yes — often titled 'House Manager / Butler.' Above roughly 6-8 staff or 2 residences, splitting the roles becomes the healthier structure.
- Do butlers manage other staff?
- They can lead the service team (footmen, housemen, junior stewards) but are not typically responsible for engineering, grounds or vendors.
- Which role should we hire first?
- If operations are the pain point, hire the household manager first. If the guest experience is the pain point, hire the butler first.
